The author Jim Parnell died in August 2022.

The book is a history of the three Park Brothers who lived in Hokitika, in the late 1800s, who built the first Rob Roy style canoes in New Zealand, formed a canoe club in 1886 and went on to achieve several outstanding paddling adventures. One of their best was a trip across the South Island, up the Taramakau River, a portage down over Harper Pass, and a paddle down the Hurunui River to near Christchurch.

The canoe One One, built by James Park, will feature in Paul Caffyn’s canoe and kayak wing of a planned Shantytown adventure museum.
